Mouth Splints and Mouthguards

Our dentists at Stradbroke Dental are able to go over any questions you have or information that you need about mouth splints and mouthguards.

Mouth splints

Mouth splints are made to alleviate teeth grinding.  Teeth grinding is a surprisingly common occurrence and often happens whilst you are asleep. Grinding can result in headaches, earaches, jaw problems, facial pain and sensitivity. Teeth grinding, more often than not occurs during sleep.

The most common way to alleviate this is to fabricate an occlusal splint. It is made out of a clear hard or hard/soft material and takes the pressure off the teeth and on to the splint. It reduces tooth wear and the pressure of tooth grinding.

A mouthguard is a removable rubber or polyvinyl shield worn over your teeth, most commonly the upper teeth, to protect the teeth and jaws from traumatic injury during sporting activities. Teeth are at risk of damage when playing sport and can result in long and potentially expensive treatment to restore them to normal function and appearance.

Mouthguards also help to reduce the risk of jaw fractures and concussion caused by a collision.

Mouthguards are the most effective protective pieces of equipment to help prevent injury to the teeth during contact sports. They can also cushion the jaw in these sports protecting the jaws, neck and brain.

An impression is taken and the dental technician will fabricate a mouth guard in your colour of choice. Mouthguards require periodic replacement, and the dentist will inform you when this may need to occur.

Mouthguard Care

After use, mouthguards should be rinsed in cold, soapy water. They can be disinfected occasionally with a mild disinfectant solution or mouth rinse.

A mouthguard should be stored clean and dry in a plastic container ready for its next use. As mouthguards can distort under higher temperatures, they should be kept in a cool place, not in the back of a hot car on a sunny day.
